Hampton Roads Rocks!
I am very happy that we moved down here. The best and most obvious reason is that we do NOT have 2 feet of frozen slush and black rock-salt in our front yard. I could make a top 200 list of why I hated upstate NY winters. Today it was 60 degrees, and the earliest that the sun went down this winter was around 4:30. Pitch black at 4pm stinks.
I love watching F-22 Raptors fly overhead every day. The end of the runway at Langley AFB is about 3 miles from the kids' swingset. The jets fly behind (and sometimes around) our house when on final approach before landing. This picture was taken over Fort Monroe, which is right next to Langley.
Working at the shipyard is just cool. It is like being on a perpetual episode of TLCs "Build it Bigger". I think the best way to think about it is like this: the most important thing for me to do is to get out of my office and walk the 1/2 mile down to the pier, or the huge building where they put together the submarines. Then I walk around and watch the workers and Navy crews (while carrying my clipboard). I ask what the folks are doing and how they are proceeding. If I don't like their answers, I ask more questions or start scribbling. The bad part is that sometimes I have to be present at rotten times to observe an evolution. 0600 this past Sunday was one of those times.
I'll finish this post later...
