April has been a month of doing good deeds, especially with my Wolf Cub Scouts. I think out of all the activities we do, service projects have always been a hit and the boys truly enjoy it. The scouts made these wonderful Easter cards that were sent to friends of ours and their Troops stationed over in Iraq and Afghanistan.
My Wolf scouts had the opportunity to earn the Disabilities Awareness Belt Loop and Pin. This award is a fairly new one and we took advantage of doing another service related project with the Disabilities Awareness theme. We decided to host an Easter Egg Hunt for some special preschoolers that attend Gatewood Peep Preschool, a public special-ed preschool, conveniently located right across the street from our school in Newport News. In March, the scouts got to tour the preschool and meet their students and staff. The director of the preschool showed the boys a slideshow about the school and all the neat things that they do there. She also talked about the special needs of the preschoolers. These little peeps have disabilities that vary from physical disabilities to all levels of the autism spectrum. The boys also learned that not everyone can experience, communicate, or interact with the world in the same way as they do. The boys got to meet and greet the preschoolers who were very happy to have visitors.
The boys filled close to 400 plastic eggs with treats.
The egg hunt was a success and the scouts enjoyed "hiding" the eggs as well as the preschoolers who had to "hunt" for them. Everyone had fun and it was a joy to see the smiles on the kids' faces.
We wish you and your families a very HAPPY, SAFE, AND BLESSED EASTER!!
