Head for a Hill

Well this past weekend brought a snowstorm down here in Virginia. We got about 6 inches in our neighborhood but there was as much as 10 inches of snow in other nearby areas. The local DOT does not not have any of the means necessary to clear the roads although a lot of sand had been put down on the major roadways. The storm hit us on Saturday, all day, with a mixture of sleet and snow. It is now Tuesday and the kids have had two days off from school. I think they are actually looking forward to going back to school tomorrow.

Thanks to the local paper, we were able to find a place to take the kids (sans Alex who wasn't feeling well) sledding both on Sunday and Monday. (And yes, even I went sledding too.) If you've ever visited down south, especially in this area, you will notice how flat the land is. It seems like we found the perfect spot as there were many other families enjoying the man-made hills located at the Riverview Farm Park in Newport News. It was quite amusing to see the make-shift sleds that people were using. They ranged from cardboard boxes to swimming pool floats. If there is one thing that Newport News does well, it is maintaining their Parks and Recreation. To my surprise they even have a gymnastics facility which the town owns but I believe is run by a private company. Riverview Farm Park was such a great find and we are looking forward to frequenting it when spring arrives.

The kids really enjoyed having the snow to play in for a change. But when it came time for us to clear our driveway, both Ted and I agree that we are glad it is something we don't see often anymore.
